Autumn Term 1

The children made a great start to Year One with our first topic, All About Me. We had a storng Science focus in this topic, learning all about the different parts of our bodies, the five senses and identifying similarities and differences between ourselves and others. We looked closely at our facial features through our Art lessons where we did lots of work on creating portraits and self-portraits using different techniques.

In Maths we consolidated the skills we have learned in Class Reception. We did lots of work revising Place Value for numbers to 20, and looked at different strategies for addition and subtraction.

In RE we looked at the question What does it mean to belong? We talked about different groups we belong to, such as our families, friends, our school, our class, football clubs, swimming groups and many more. We talked about how important it is to feel a sense of belonging.

We enjoyed learning more about ou local area in our Geography work. We spent time looking at photos and maps of the local area, and we even managed to create some maps of our own.

In PE we began our work on Gymnastics, learning about different ways of travelling and balancing. We also enjoyed our work in Dance with Mrs Morton.

Autumn 2

We had a bit of a suprise at the start of November when we found a visitor in our classroom. It was Paddington Bear!

Paddington Bear turned up, brining with him some books about him, travel guides about his home country Peru, a letter from his Aunt Lucy, and even some jars of marmalade. Of course it would have been rude to let the marmalde go to waste, so we made our own marmalade sandwiches which tasted great!

We really enjoyed learning lots about Paddington's home country. We enjoyed looking at pictures of Peru and making comparisons between the Peru and the United Kingdom. Mr Booth showed us some photos of a school in Peru that he had visited. It was very different to our school and we were suprised at what some schools in other countires look like.

We studied the work of the Peruvian artist, Alvaro Suarez Vertiz. We explored the we he used shape, line, colour and texture to create his art work before creating ur own paintings in a similar style. The finished paintings looked amazing!

It had been a very busy term but the children have all made a fantastic start to Year One.
