The Intent of Reading at Kirkburton First School

At Kirkburton First School we value the importance of reading; our aim is that all children leave our school as fluent readers with a life long love of reading.

We aim to achieve this through immersing children in high quality texts for every subject area, allowing them to:

  • Imagine, develop an understanding and embrace all that the curriculum offers.
  • Gain a life-long enjoyment of reading and books.
  • Read accurately, fluently and with understanding;
  • Apply a knowledge of structured synthetic phonics in order to decode unfamiliar words with increasing accuracy and speed;
  • Be able to read with expression, clarity and confidence;
  • Develop a good linguistic knowledge of vocabulary and grammar;
  • Read and respond to a wide range of different types of texts;
  • Develop a deeper level of emotional intelligence and empathy;
  • Read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their further education.

The Implementation of Reading at Kirkburton First School

Reading is taught at Kirkburton First School from day 1 in reception through the Little Wandle Systematic Phonic Programme.

We teach phonics daily in EYFS and KS1 using a whole class approach.  We identify children (throughout the whole school) who would benefit from further phonic support and they receive additional phonic lessons throughout the week.

Children in KS1 and EYFS are taught reading three times weekly with each session having a different focus.  The first day, the children focus on decoding, the second session focuses on prosody and the third aims to equip children with comprehension skills.

As the children move into KS2, they progress into a whole class reading approach using VIPERS as a driver.

VIPERS stands for:

YEAR 1 PHONICS SCREENING

The Y1 Phonics Screening Check will take place the week beginning Monday 6th June 2022.

A parental meeting will be arranged later on this term to explain more about the screening check and provide an opportunity to look at previous materials. Please call into school if you would like any further information how best to support your child's learning at home.  Thank you.
