YR /Y1 Reading Information
We use Little Wandles Letters and Sounds; a complete systematic phonics programme, to teach reading.

Y1 PHONICS SCREENING INFORMATION
The Y1 Phonics Screening Check will take place the week beginning Monday 6th June 2022.
A parental meeting will be arranged later on this term to explain more about the screening check and provide an opportunity to look at previous materials. Please call into school if you would like any further information how best to support your child's learning at home. Thank you.
The Implementation of Phonics at Kirkburton First School
Phoincs is delivered through highly personalised, adult-led teaching several times a week. Children are regularly assessed on their phonetic understanding by our Reading Coordinator to ensure they are accessing the right provision. Home reading books are also carefully matched to the children's current phonics knowledge to ensure futher support can be delievered at home by parents and carers. In addition to this, all children are heard read 1:1 regularly at school, so that bespoke feedback and targets can be given to each child.
The Impact of Phonics at Kirkburton First School
As a result of the excellent phonics teaching delievered by our highly-trained staff, children at Kirkburton are quickly able to read fluently, allowing them to foster a life-long love of reading. The school's results in the national Year 1 phonics check are consistantly above the national and local average.
Most pleasing of all, our key stage one children push on throughout key stage two to become truly fluent readers who exhibit a genuine love of reading, which truely is the goal of every single adult working at Kirkburton CE(VA) First School.
