Computing

The Intent of Computing at Kirkburton CE First School

At Kirkburton, we aim to deliver a high-quality computing curriculum that enables all pupils to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology. Using the Teach Computing Curriculum as the foundation of our teaching, we intend to ensure that pupils:

  • Develop strong computational thinking skills that enable them to understand problems and design effective solutions.

  • Build secure subject knowledge in the core strands of computing, including computing systems and networks, programming, data and information, and creating digital content.

  • Understand how digital systems work and how they are used safely, respectfully and purposefully in everyday life.

  • Become digitally literate, able to use technology with confidence and creativity to express ideas, design solutions and work collaboratively.

  • Apply their computing skills across the wider curriculum and in real-world contexts, preparing them for future learning, study, work and participation in a rapidly changing digital society.

  • Develop a deep understanding of online safety, including how to behave responsibly, recognise risks, and protect themselves and others when using digital technologies.

Our curriculum builds progressively from Early Years through Key Stage 2, ensuring that pupils revisit and expand their understanding year-on-year, gaining both substantive knowledge and disciplinary skills that prepare them for Key Stage 3 and beyond.

The Implementation of Computing at Kirkburton CE First School

Our computing curriculum is delivered using the Teach Computing Curriculum, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum and a carefully sequenced progression of knowledge and skills from Year 1 through to Year 6.

Lessons are structured around the four core strands of the Teach Computing Curriculum:
Computing Systems and Networks, Programming, Data and Information, and Creating Media, with Online Safety taught regularly and revisited throughout the year.

Teachers use consistent language, models and approaches to computing, supporting pupils in developing computational thinking skills such as decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction and algorithmic thinking.

Online safety is embedded across the curriculum and reinforced through real-life scenarios, ensuring pupils understand how to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully. The school also takes part in a dedicated Internet Safety Week annually.

The Impact of Computing at Kirkburton CE First School

As a result of our computing curriculum, Pupils leave primary school as confident, capable and responsible users of technology. They demonstrate secure understanding of key computing concepts and can apply their knowledge to a range of tasks, including programming, data handling and digital creation.

Pupils show strong computational thinking skills, enabling them to solve problems logically and creatively. Children understand the purpose and relevance of computing in the wider world and are able to transfer skills across the curriculum.

Online safety knowledge is evident in pupils’ behaviour, with children able to recognise risks, make informed choices and seek support when needed. Pupils engage positively with computing, showing curiosity, resilience and enjoyment in using technology to learn and express ideas.
