Kirkburton CE First School

British Values

At Kirkburton, we are committed to promoting the fundamental British Values as part of our provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development. These values help prepare children to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who contribute positively to modern Britain.

The British Values are embedded across our curriculum and daily school life and are reinforced through assemblies, lessons, behaviour expectations and wider school experiences.

What are the British Values?

Democracy

We teach pupils that their opinions matter and that they have a voice.

Children learn about democracy through:

  • Voting in class decisions and school council elections

  • Taking part in pupil voice activities

  • Turn-taking, discussion and debate

  • Understanding that decisions are made fairly

Our School Council enables pupils to represent their peers and contribute ideas to improve school life.

The Rule of Law

Pupils learn the importance of rules and laws in keeping everyone safe and happy as is shown in our Vision Statement of Nurturing children to Love, Learn and Shine. We teach children to Learn and follow instructions as part of our whole school rules.

This is taught through:

  • Clear school rules and expectations

  • Consistent behaviour systems and rewards

  • Understanding right and wrong

  • Learning about laws and consequences in age-appropriate ways

We help children understand that rules apply to everyone and are important both in school and in wider society.

Individual Liberty

We encourage pupils to make safe, informed choices and to express themselves confidently, as is shown in our Vision Statement of Nurturing children to Love, Learn and Shine. We teach children to be proud of who they are and shine their gifts and talents before others.

Children learn about individual liberty through:

  • Understanding personal rights and responsibilities

  • Developing self-confidence and independence

  • Learning about e-safety and staying safe

  • Making choices in learning and play

We support children to develop a sense of responsibility for their own actions while respecting the rights of others.

Mutual Respect

Respect is at the heart of our school community, as is shown in our Vision Statement of Nurturing children to Love, Learn and Shine. We teach children to love all their neighbours as themselves..

Pupils are taught to:

  • Treat others kindly and fairly

  • Listen to different viewpoints

  • Celebrate achievements and effort

  • Resolve disagreements calmly

Respect is modelled by adults and expected from everyone within the school.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We promote understanding and respect for people of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds, as is shown in our Vision Statement of Nurturing children to Love, Learn and Shine. We teach children to love all their neighbours as themselves...

Children develop tolerance through:

  • Learning about different religions and cultures

  • Celebrating festivals and special events

  • Challenging stereotypes and prejudice

  • Encouraging curiosity and open-mindedness

We help pupils understand that everyone is unique and deserves respect.
